much earlier in course of his magic ceremonies. The representation of the human body or skeleton on the costume was intended to secure the return of the shaman to his clothes or that of his soul to his body. As our source is no actual shaman costume but a cavepainting after all, we hawe to reckon with the possibility that the design wanted to mark the presence of a man, the shaman, behind it. The portrayal in the painting and the similar costumes used in reality had to possess an identical religious background at any rate. So only one of our suppositions can hold ground. It is to be hoped, however, that the monuments of Late Palaeolithic Shamanism, enriched by this rock engraving, will be increased in the future, so that we shall be able to make further observations, possibly as regards the problem of the shaman costume. Our hope is well founded, as the finds mirroring such views of the Old Stone Age must be picture-like ones in the first place. J. Makkay 10
