A. R. Birley: Some Governors of Moesia Inferior
their provincial governors pass over the sons of consuls, turning ever and again to newer families and a widening zone of recruitment.”<3) There are naturally some exceptions - Alföldy’s 18 from the reigns of Pius and Marcus can be enlarged upon by adding cases from the years 70—138 and 180-260. But all told the number is quite small; and, thanks to the lists assembled by Bengt Thomasson in his Laterculi Praesidum, no great la-Hispania Citerior: bour is involved in setting out a roll call. For this purpose one may exclude the provinces of Dalmatia and Pontus-Bithynia. consular but lacking legions in the years concerned. This leaves twelve provinces, in geographical order Hispania Citerior; Britannia; Germania Inferior; Germania Superior; Pannonia (Superior); Pannonia Inferior (from the year 214 onwards), Moesia Superior; Moesia Inferior; III Daciae; Cappadocia; Syria ; Syria Palaestina. Ti. Plautius Silvanus Aelianus (cos. suff. 45) Junius Homullus (cos. suff. c. 130) L. Venuleius Apronianus (cos. suff. 7145) T. Pomponius Proculus Vitrasius Pollio (cos. suff. 7151) Q. Hedius Rufus Lollianus Gentianus (cos. suff. c. 186) Pollienus Auspex jr. (suff. a. inc.) Britannia: Germania Inferior: Germania Superior: Germ. Historia 14 (1965) 342-361, p. 361 = Danubian Papers (1971) 225-244, p. 244. (4) Cornelius Priscianus - if in fact governor - is one such case; perhaps son of Pliny’s friend L. Cornelius Priscus (suff. ?104), also called Sex. Subrius Dexter (on whom see R. Syme, Roman Papers IV (1988) 386 ff.) - but these names are too common for any certainty. C. Aufidius Victorinus (cos. suff. 155) might be from the family of Aufidius Umber (suff. before c. 100). L. Novius Rufus (cos. suff. 186) was perhaps son of Novius Priscus (suff. c. 165) according to G. Alföldy, Fasti Hispanhienses (1969) 42 n. 195. M. Maecius Probus (cos. suff. before 199) might tx descended from a consular Maecius (e.g. PIR2 M 51, 58, 62). M. Nummius Umbrius Primus (cos. ord. 206), as a patrician, ought to be from a consular family, and is taken in PIR2 N 238 to be son of M. Umbrius Primus (cos. suff. ? c. 186). It should be remarked that the troublesome Pollienus Auspex might really have been only iuridicus in Spain, although labelled ‘consular’ of this and another three provinces on ILS 8841, Xanthus. 48 To this list of pretty certain cases one might add a few more possible sons or descendants of consuiars/4’ L. Neratius Marcellus (cos. suff. 95) M. Atilius Bradua (cos. ord. 108) Cn. Julius Verus (cos. suff. 7151) Pollienus Auspex jr. (cos. suff. a. inc.) Ulpius Marcellus jr. (?) (cos. suff. a. inc.)(5) L. (5) In this list, a ? after the name indicates that the man’s governorship is uncertain. In the case of the younger Ulpius Marcellus, argued to be governor of Britain in 211 by A.R. Birley, The Fasti of Roman Britain (1981) 164 fF., his existence is doubted, e.g. by P.M.M. Leunissen, Konsuln und Konsulare in der Zeit von Commodus bis Se verus Alexander (1989) 233 f. (6) Although it is not quite certain that Priscus was legate of Germania Inferior, it is certain that he was governor of cither this province or Moesia Inferior: W. Eck, Die Statthalter der germanischen Provinzen (1985) 158. (7) W. Eck, op. cit. 191 regards it as uncertain whether this Novius Priscus belonged to the same family as the cos. ord. 78, hence a ? before his name; further, he might have been only legionary legate, hence a ? after the name as well. (8) Taken in PIR2 N 140 to be son of M. Nonius Mucianus, ibid. 145. (9) G. Alföldy, Konsulat und Senatorensiand (1977) 237 f. opts for this man being the one mentioned by Dio 71.33.1; Thomasson, Laterculi I col. 105 leaves open the possibility that it was his father.
