oszlopfő, palmettákkal, madarakkal, azután egy kiváló figyelmet érdemlő mű, amelyre még röviden kitérünk. Nagy márványdombormű: Jézus, jobbján öt, balján hat apostollal. Tanulságosan mutatja a szobrászat átvedlését a plasztikai princípiumról a festőire. Hercules, suggests the same period and region. A marble head of the young Nero was unearthed near Chius (an island in Anatolia). A small sarcophagus from Ravenna, adorned with female and male figures in shallow relief, is a good example from the Roman provinces in later times.

With this overview we conclude our summary of pieces from the ancient world. We now turn to examples of the plastic arts from Italy, other than those previously noted. I refer to three works; a graceful Romanesque capital with palm leaves and birds, and another remarkable work of art, which is worthy of a short detour. It is a large marble relief of Jesus with five apostles on His right and six on the left. It is an illuminating example of the transformation from the plastic principle to the picturesque in sculpture. There is no trace of the exaggerated gestures of Bernini, but the arrangement of
