Művészettörténet–Krónika - Gyarmati Gabriella: Pályaívek hasonlósága. Munkácsy Mihály és Pulitzer József

GYARMATI GABRIELLA Pályaívek hasonlósága. Munkácsy Mihály és Pulitzer József Similarity of careers. Mihály Munkácsy and József Pulitzer Although they entered into different career paths, one would not think that there are a lot of similarities in their life stories and relationship to their professions of the Makó-born journalist and newspaper owner József Pulitzer and the painter Mihály Munkácsy, who was born in Munkács, but spent his childhood years in Békéscsaba. In this paper, I deal with the comparison of the careers of these two prominent Hungarians, who both made a career abroad, focusing on the same moments of fate and presenting unique achievements and outstanding products. I will try to outline the parallel powerlines drawn, which give us supplementary information about the personalities of these distinguished and prominent people who created a lot more in their own field over the level of meaningful, and who were considered as masters of their trade by their contemporaries. The comparison is, in fact, an attempt to create a new perspective from which we can see the stories of both Munkácsy and Pulitzer, a perspective that we have not thought of so far. The personal encounter and the portrait of József Pulitzer’s wife painted by Mihály Munkácsy, provide a realistic historical basis to compare the two life paths, but the oeuvres are commonly referred to by the two people's work resulting in a paradigmatic change. 603
