Néprajz–Etnológia - Mód László: Mozaikok a makói szőlő- és bortermelés történetéből

MÓD LÁSZLÓ Mozaikok a makói szőlő- és bortermelés történetéből Mosaics from the history of grape and wine production in Makó The decline in vine growing in Makó already began at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries when the cultivation of other crops, especially onions, began to be more and more emphasized in vineyards. Nevertheless, we should not forget that the residential area started to occupy larger and larger areas of vineyards. Similar processes took place in other settlements, such as Szeged, but here the viticulture went on a completely different path. The most important difference was that there were no large sand covered areas near Makó, where grapes could gradually be drawn out to from the residential core. This circumstance was decisive at the end of the 19th century when the vineyards on bound soil were almost completely destroyed due to phylloxera (vine pest]. Similarly, in the case of several southern settlements besides Makó like Szentes, Mindszent and partly Hódmezővásárhely, the opportunities for the survival of vineyards were provided by flood protection barriers and areas between rivers, ie. floodplains, where the facilities prevented the development of a large scale installation. Of course, this did not mean that the vineyards would have completely disappeared since the replanting of European varieties with American subjects could be carried out in a costly but accomplishable way. To further explore this topic, news sources of local and national newspapers are provided, from which the study attempts to enumerate and analyze reports published in the Wine Magazines. These resources can tinge the research results so far and contribute to a better understanding of the processes outlined in the introduction. 348
