JÁMBOR ZOLTÁN Egy kortárs emlékei Memories of a contemporary The 90-year-old Zoltán Jámbor shares the memories of his own life and his experiences related to historical times in his recollection. In the history of the family from Bácska, the crises and historical processes of the 20th century’s appear. After the First World War, the family settled in Makó, but in 1941, because of his father's work at the railroad, they moved to Ugocsa county in Upper Hungary and then returned to Makó. In recalling the past, the author gives a valuable insight into the process of „elite change"governed by the state that began in 1946, and was later expanded in 1949. The reader gets extra information on the processes typical of the era, like the agitation techniques of the „preachers" the agendas of the years spent in prison, the daily routines and unexpected eventseveryday, the physical abuse, the torture and executions also appear. The author survived the era, but until 1970, Kádár’s amnesty, he was a person under constant control, which he expresses this way: „The state kept its watchful eyes on me." The contemporary memories of a system making everything impossible appear in retrospect. 265
