Kolarovszki Tamás: Ítél a nép – Egy makói gyógyszerész a Szálasi per harmadrendű vádlottja
KOLAROVSZKITAMAS ítél a nép - Egy makói gyógyszerész a Szálasi per harmadrendű vádlottja A public judgement: A pharmacist from Makó is the third accused in the Szálasi lawsuit "The hands of the clock show half past eight. Suddenly excitement overcomes the corridors. News spread that the accused were brought in. Police officers with machine guns escort Szálasi who is wearing a long dark grey loden coat, and palely walks at the head of the procession. He is followed by Gabor Vajna , also surrounded by policemen with machine guns. Then follows Szőllősi Naszluhácz-Eugene, whose face is yellow from the sleepless nights. After him, the figures of Dr. Sándor Csia and Dr. József Gera appear, and then Baron Gabor Kemeny, the former foreign minister of the green insane, is last in the line with Károly Berger Beregffy. The crowd protests noisily. They cry: - Traitors, scoundrels, murderers, gallows-birds!" This is how the defendants were accepted upon arrival for the hearing. In the introductory part of my essay, I outline the establishment of the legal background for the prosecution of war criminals in Hungary, the composition of the People's Tribunals as well as the circumstances of bringing home the defendants in the Szálasi lawsuit. I present Szőllősi Eugene's life: how a simple pharmacist becomes a senior politician after the Arrow Cross coup, then I cover the parts of the Szálasi case in connection with Szőllősi. 150
