In the article we publish the materials of a nomadic grave assemblage investigated in the steppe of the left bank Don region. Byzantine coins found in the burial let us date it to the last third of the 7 th century AD. On the basis of characteristic features of the burial, this barrow-grave belongs to an expressive group of sites concentrated mainly in the Don basin. These sites with a great probability belonged to the Turkuts — the closest environment of the Khazar kagans of Turkish origin in the earliest phase of the existence of the Kaganate. Sites representing the same group as the one published here illustrate the coincidence of the ethnic and social differentiation of the Khazarian population and undoubtedly belong to the top of the society. The principal significance of the assemblage studied in the article is its chronological position. In the frames of its cultural group it belongs to the earliest ones and is connected with the time of the stabilisation of the Turkish-Khazarian hegemony in the steppes of South Russia.
