Sofia 1988. NEW FINDS OF BYZANTINE AND IRANIAN IMPORT IN THE STEPPES OF THE DON REGION S A. NAUMENKO-S. I. BEZUGLOV In the article, gold Byzantine coins and unique examples of Sasanian toreutics are published: a silver jug and cup coming from three nomadic graves from the second half of the 7th - beginning of the 8th centuries. These graves were investigated in the steppes of the Lower Don region. The analysis of numismatic finds allows us to make more precise the chronological frames of the whole cultural-ethnographic group and supports the good dating possibilities of the Byzantine solidi found in the nomadic graves of the Don region. These burials were covered by barrow and surrounded by rectangular ditch. These assemblages precede in time classical sites of the Saltovo-Maiak culture. Byzantine objects published here can be considered to be the result of payment to Turkut-Khazars in the periods of the utmost meeting of common interest of the Empire and the Kaganate. Iranian cup could be a part of the property of a rich Turk clan migrated from the East, or a booty.
