BOGOLY József Ágoston: Urbs, textus, imago. 1890: Temesvár és Arad
JÓZSEF ÁGOSTON BOGOLY URBS, TEXTUS, IMAGO TEMESVÁR AND ARAD 1890 Narrative construction and descriptions on towns provide valuable source for historical and literary research. In 1890 Temesvár (today Timi§oara, Romania) was presented by Róbert Tábori, and Arad (today Arad, Romania) by Károly Méray-Horváth in the Budapest based literary journal, Magyar Salon. These two feuilletons could be approached from the aspect of historical space research and literary studies. The journalist, drama critic, playwright and novelist Róbert Tábori (1855-1906) worked as a journalist in Wien and Berlin. Editing the Délmagyarországi Közlöny daily he lived in Temesvár from 1887 until 1890. Károly Méray-Horváth (1859-1938) studied natural sciences and fine arts in Paris and Munich. Later he turned to positivist social sciences. He published critics, fictions and sociological works. Károly Méray-Horváth was the editor of the journal Arad és Vidéke from 1887 to 1893. The historical proposition revealed in both feuilletons enables the textual construction of the overall image of these organically developing towns. Several thematic connections can be revealed in the feuilletons of Róbert Tábori and Károly Méray-Horváth. The past of the multilingual Temesvár is described similarly to the history of Arad, highlighting the viewpoint of multinational coexistence. Elements of urbanisation, middle class development, and Magyarization of the late 19 t h century are all present in these texts. 72
