th CENTURY KECSKEMÉT ON THE LAUNCHING OF THE NEWSPAPER KECSKEMÉTI LAPOK It was 140 years ago that the first weekly paper in Kecskemét, entitled Kecskeméti Lapok, was launched on 3

rd October 1868. In the first few years the paper was a forum of liberal politicians and intellectuals of the city. Its first editor was László Madarassy, the lawyer and writer who had travelled across North America. Later on János Hornyik, town-clerk, as well as Döme Horváth, Member of Parliament, later councillor worked as editors of Kecskeméti Lapok. The first weekly of Kecskemét was issued by book-seller Fülöp Gallia, then by the Deák Society of Kecskemét, and finally in 1875 by the Liberal Party. At its launching the newspaper represented the economic, social and political endeavours of the prospering city. The weekly reported the readers on the work of the City Council, as well as provided a forum for political debates of the tune. Author of present study reveals processes of press history, together with social and political historical data based on the issues of Kecskeméti Lapok between 1868 and 1875 and the documentation preserved in the County Archives of Bács-Kiskun.
