st December, 1925 regular radio broadcasting started in Budapest. While the American system built on commercial activity constituted of private radios, in Europe public function was highlighted, and radio broadcasting became a state monopoly. In the 1920s amateur radios were operating in Szeged. Bad conditions of reception and high prices of radio sets blocked the spreading of the activity. Present paper studies the value of radio sets based on inventories of estates from households of the period. The change of regime in 1990 opened the way for commercial broadcasting. The authors introduce the factors taking part in a rapidly changing market. In Hungary during the period of radio production (1924-1985) approximately 1000 different types of sets were produced. 9 bigger companies and 26 smaller ones manufactured sets of world standard. The radio sets preserved in the collection of the Móra Ferenc Museum are published in a catalogue.
