ISTVÁN ZOMBORI FROM THE VOTIVE CHURCH TO THE BISHOP'S CATHEDRAL The today Cathedral originally was planned as a votive church to commemorate the flood of 12 March 1879 and as thanksgiving for the survival of the city after the enormous damage. For decades discussions of the idea were drawn out, while at the beginning of the 1900s as a result of an open competition the plan of the church was designed. The construction started in 1913 following the approved plan. The work was soon interrupted by the First World War, nonetheless by that time a significant part of the building had already been built. In 1920 as a result of the Peace Treaty of Paris (Versailles) a new Hungary was created, where the role and position of the city of Szeged became entirely different. The fundamental change was partly due to the political situation of the country after the treaty and its effect on Szeged, and partly due to the change in the ecclesiastical situation of the town, namely the moving of the diocesan bishop from Temesvár (today Timisoara, Romania) to Szeged. The idea to develop the originally 'simple' votive church of Szeged into a diocesan cathedral appeared. This obviously influenced the structure, size and finances of the church under construction. Simultaneously the buildings of the university transferred from Kolozsvár (today Cluj, Romania) to Szeged as a result of the treaty were designed around the planned church. The aspiration was to reflect in the interior, size and outlook of the university buildings the achievements of the thousand-year-old Hungary, its European spirit and to testify the unity of the nation split by the peace treaty. The Cathedral, the Cathedral Square and the institutions around it were completed as a result of the will, endeavor and sacrifice of the Hungarian state, the Catholic Church and the more than 100.000 citizens of the city of Szeged. This representative sphere promulgates that it is a result of human will which finds new aims in creation stepping over sorrow.
