KATKÓ ÉVA BAGI FLAGJ3LESSING CITIZENS IN SZEGED DURING THE MILLENNIUM (1896) In 2002 the elaboration of the flag-collection at Móra Ferenc Museum highlighted in a collected exhibition and the issue of a catalogue. The flags are now stored in trays of suitable size between acid-free sheets of paper excluding light, dust and other harming factors. Having completed this task, researchers at the museum turned their attention to flagpoles also conveying a great deal of information. The poles are mostly 4-5 meters long. They are all examples of high quality metal-work and joinery of the 19

th century, with their turned ornaments and metal shields with coat of arms covering them. Depictions are chosen from the countless symbols of Christianity, as weD as from national symbols. Shields with carved names cover 13 flagpoles of the collection. Present study analyses their symbols and work. As a result of complex research several thousand of names have been recorded. The list of names reveals a group of the citizens of Szeged who besides taking part in different societies of protection, also had esthetical and social demands.
