NAGYGYÖRGY Zoltán: A 230 éve újratelepített Horgos címere
ZOLTÁN NAGYGYÖRGY THE ARMS OF COAT OF HORGOS RESETTLED 230 YEARS AGO Horgos is a village settled from Szeged, whose area belonged to Csongrád county. Consequently it was an integral part of Hungary for over 1000 years. The fishing-village of Horgos suffered two serious blows already in the Arpad age: the settlement was damaged first during the Tartar attack, then in time of the Turkish occupation. In time of the latter the village was destroyed completely. In time of reorganisation of the Great Hungarian Plain, and that of Csongrád county, the town-clerk of Szeged, noble Miklós Kárász originated from Northern Hungary bought the puszta territories of Horgos and Tisza Szent Péter sold by the Treasury. Twenty years later, on 11th March 1771, empress Maria Theresa handed the possessory diploma over to Kárász with the proviso that he had to resettle Horgos. Kárász started the process of resettlement already in the very same year, 3 kilometres east to the original settlement. This has become the today Horgos. The office of representation at the resettled village had always had an authorized seal with the arms. After a while as the village was developing, the illustration of the seals were also changing. The study follows these changings. On the 230th anniversary of the resettlement of the village the local government of Horgos had the picture of the first seal restored by local historian and graphic artist Zoltán Nagygyörgy. This earliest picture of a seal is the official arms of the settlement.
