NAGYGYÖRGY Zoltán: Horgos helytörténetének kutatása és kultúrájának helyzete
ZOLTÁN NAGYGYÖRGY STUDIES ON LOCAL HISTORY AND CULTURAL SITUATION OF HORGOS GENERAL SURVEY The territory of Horgos (Horgos, today in Serbia-Montenegro) being a settlement of Szeged belonged to Hungary, to the county of Csongrád, for more than a thousand years. The present paper gives a review on the most significant publications in chronological order dealing with the history, geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of this one time border area. It also reveals the cultural situation of the region still influenced by Szeged, at the same time suggesting further historical and archaeological researches. THE HISTORY OF THE WINE-REGION OF HORGOS Horgos and Horgos-Királyhalom are the settlements of Szeged situated in the contiguous wine-region of the Southern part of the Great Hungarian Plain. A part of this region was disunited from Hungary in 1920 according to the Trianon Peace Treaty. The settlement of Horgos-Királyhalom was established due to the expanding wine-growing activity on sandy soil encouraged by entrepreneurs from Szeged. This part of the history of wine-growing in Hungary so far has been ignored. THE HISTORY OF FOLK-SONG COLLECTION IN HORGOS-KAMARÁS Szeged and its surroundings can be considered as the cradle of folk-song collection activity. Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály together with other excellent scholars decided to start their activity aiming at collecting folk-song tradition in this region of Hungary. Many historians have studied and reconstructed the route of these world-famous artists. However, on the folk-song collection carried out in Horgos-Kamarás only very little has been known up to now. Horgos-Kamarás used to be a popular resort place for the citizens of Szeged until it was connected to Jugoslavia due to the Trianon Peace Treaty in 1920. Now a decisive document has been revealed providing evidence of Béla Bartók's work carried out in Kamarás. This document at the same time completes our knowledge on his stay in Szeged.
