ISTVÁN ZOMBORI CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE 20™ CENTURY HISTORY OF THE FRANCISCAN MONASTERY IN SZEGED-LOWERTOWN (Based on the História Domus) The monastery and its residents, the Franciscan friars played a decisive role in the life of Szeged-Lowertown, in a wider sense in that of the city of Szeged, while in certain periods - especially in the era of the Turkish occupation - even in the life of the region of Southern Hungary. This should be emphasized in order to throw light upon the fact that studying the history of the Franciscan monastery in Szeged-Lowertown as well as the activity of the order living there - with special regards to the rich source material preserved - one may reach significant conclusions not only in terms of church history, but also in the respect of social history, cultural history and in certain periods that of political history. In the present paper an attempt is made to reveal a chapter in the 20 th century history of Szeged by studying two characteristic and at the same time remarkable part of the História Domus of the monastery. One of the chosen parts is an inventory of the church and the monastery prepared on the request of the principals of the order dated 30 April 1925. The other is a summary written by Gottfrid P. on the request of the guardian based on his own diary kept between years 1944-46. The inventory is considered really significant and valuable, since through analysing it the everyday life of the friars living in this monastery can be revealed. The second source is a summary of extreme importance presenting the last months of World War II also giving a report on the bombing of Szeged and the first years of peace.
