This regulation of the right of voting had become completely anachronistic by 1920 as it not only excluded women from those having the right to vote, but contained property and cultural qualifications in voting for men as well. The new state formulated on the ruins of historical Hungary required a new regulation of the right of vote. This regulation was elaborated by the Friedrich government came into power after the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. According to the new regulation men older than 24, respectively men younger than 24 with a 12-week long service in the field, women older than 24 not illiterate had right to vote. Obligatory vote by secret ballot was introduced. As a result of the new regulation the rate of those having the right to vote increased from 6,4% to 40%. Hódmezővásárhely was under Romanian occupation from 30. April 1919 to 2. March 1920, thuswise the polling set on 25-26. January 1920 was postponed to 13-14. June 1920 by the Minister of the Interior. The town was divided into two election districts. In electoral district I. two candidates from the Party of Smallholders struggled for the seat: Gusztáv Emich, Minister of Commerce and Dezső Lázár who was supported by local farmers. The seat was won by Gusztáv Emich in close contest. However, Emich was nominated for ambassador in Berlin on 28. August, thus he was to renounce his seat. The by-election held on 26-27. September 1920 was unanimously won by count István Bethlen, the later prime minister. In district II. 4 candidates made an attempt to collect the 500 nominations needed. Finally two candidates of the Party of Smallholders entered for the election, Prof. Lajos Szádeczky, historian and Iván Sallay, post-office clerk and one candidate of the National Party of Hungarian Workers, Gyula Kacsó retired engine-driver. The election was won with overwhelming majority by Lajos Szádeczky. CSML HL Hmvh. v. Kp.-i Vál. ir. CSML HL Hmvh. Pm.-i Hiv. ir. CSML HL Térképek
