ISTVÁN ZOMBORI THE HISTORICAL GALLERY OF THE SZEGED MUSEUM The Szeged Museum was established in 1883. Its first collection was numismatic, followed by the establishment of a historic and architectural collection. At the end of the 1880's Museum Director János Reizner attempted to obtain the paintings located in the Szeged City Hall, which primarily illustrated rulers of a previous era, politicians of the city, mayors, senators and other notable persons. This attempt met with partial success during the period 1890-91. As the city was reluctant to hand over these paintings, which were of great importance to them, János Reizner initiated a major campaign, during which he requested portraits illustrating earlier notable persons of Szeged to be donated by family members living in the city of Szeged or in other parts of the country, or attempted to have artists provide copies of existing portraits, at the request of the Museum. As a result of this campaign many paintings were handed over by the Town Hall during the period 1890-91-92, and as a result of the copies mentioned above, many portraits of notable persons were painted and thus came into the Museum's collection. In October, 1892, János Reizner prepared his hand-written inventory, which describes the Historical Gallery of the Szeged Museum. This very important document provides fundamental information on the paintings acquired by the Museum, together with a detailed description of their historic links. János Reizner continued to maintain this inventory up until his death in 1904. This study examines and analyses various sections of the Szeged Historical Gallery and the paintings that are to be found there, and at the end of the publication the extremely important notes on the paintings, which were written by János Reizner, will be quoted verbatim. Festője ismeretlen, de valószínűleg régi magyar mester műve. A kép a fejedelmet térdnagyságban ábrázolja. Testét arany ékítésű vas pánczélzat fedi, e fölött fél oldalra vetett, fehér prémes piros mente, arany zsinórzattal. A jobb kézben vállra emelt meztelen pallost tart. A kép alsó, bal sarkán világosan látható: Rako... / Zsig... / Prin... felirat. A fesmény 35 Vi magas és 27 Vz ctmr széles keretre van felvonva. Eredetileg valamivel nagyobb és szélesebb volt, de a régi keretről valószínűleg levált s az új keretre való felfeszítés alkalmával megcsonkíttatott. A kép néhai Lászy Vilmos színigazgatótól vásárolt, különféle régiségekkel együtt szereztetett be 1885-ben. (Lásd Somogyi könyvt. levéltára 37/885 sz.) A kép már előzőleg eszközlött tisztogatások (firniszszel) következtében igen rongált és piszkos volt.
