The midday chime signals the victory gained at Nándorfehérvár in 1556. The bells also accompany ecclesiastical ceremonies: their chime invites for a mass, announces death, warns and asks for help in the event of danger (storm, flood, fire). The authors have made a record of the stock of bells found in the churches of Csongrád and the area surrounding the city. On the basis of the História Domus kept in custody in the archive of the Lady vicarage, data concerning the bells was selected and processed. Unfortunately, a great number of beautiful bells were removed into gun-foundries during the first and the second world war. To this day, only three bells from the period before 1900 have been preserved. Bells continued to disappear even in the years following 1990, they were simply stolen from the vicinity of abandoned schools. The authors publish data regarding the bells that have been preserved (in particular, weight, diameter, height), along with their inscriptions. In the event of destroyed bells, the authors tried to gather this latter piece of information from old documents. 32 A Csongrádi Református Egyházközség nyilvántartása, a szentesi református lelkészi hivatalban.
