His father did not give them to him, but directed him to get and prepare them (Mooney MS #2538: Box 1). On February 12, 1906, James Mooney interviewed Buffalo Thigh again, but Lone Wolf and his wife, as well as Stone were also present. On this occasion Buffalo Thigh gave a detailed description on the history of his shield: 99a Buffalo Thigh = Hotóa-hévis 1 February 12-1906 No special name [for this shield] [Informants:] Lone Wolf and wife present Stone Buffalo Thigh Buffalo Thigh, more properly „Lean Flank from Hunger". He was born in 1842. He was seven years old at the time of cholera. His father was Sutai, mother Masikota. He camped after marriage with Masikota, close to door, as Omisis were next their part of the campcircle, because his wife belonged there. His society is the Himoiyoquis. [He had] Only one shield. Got it in 1861 - in the summer of the same year, in spring of which was noted fight with the Pawnees, Otos and Masuhan, in which was killed the noted Cheyenne, Mónimiósts = „New, or First Appearing Medicine Man". He was not a chief, but a prominent warrior. He was Iron Shirt's brother (see: P39a, 3-4). The fight was on the Big Blue [river]. The Cheyennes had visited Otos and made friendly arrangement with them. On leaving for return the Otos broke camp and started north. They met Pawnees, coming vs. the Cheyenne. Joined them. Cheyenne spies brought news of Pawnee approach. Met them, and the Otos helped the Pawnees. - see: ante. Description - He gave it to his younger brother, Moqtávi-Aínoi = Black Hawk, in the spring after Chivington fight, that is in 1865. His younger brother is still living at Hammon. He does not know what he did with the shield. Origin - does not know original dreamer, it came from the Arapahoes. His father's father, Ma-áchsíhiyum - „Old Man Tipi" (as if tipi personified) was roamed with Arapaho, and got it from them. He gave it to this man's father, Aístominúqníq = False Lame.
