Nagy Imre: A Preliminary Report on the Friedman Kein Canvas

him. From his white horse a dashed line indicates his path to the fallen enemy. Behind him on the ground, and beside his footsteps lies his quiver - made from the furred skin of an animal with small spots. He wears a black shirt, and black cloth leggings decorated with a wide beaded strips. His braids are wrapped with red and blue cloth strips. There is a red breath feather tied to his scalplock, and a long row of German-silver conchos hangs from his scalplock. He holds a knife in his right hand close to the head of the White man. The White civilian lies on his back, and his carbine is on the ground nearby. He wears a red striped shirt, and gray pants. (06) R2C2 The mounted Cheyenne lances an enemy in the breast. The faint pencil lines make it impossible to identify the sex of the enemy. The figure itself is unfinished as the lines of the legs are not continued beyond the legs of the horse. Its upper body is covered by a dress which is tied at the waist by a red sash. The Cheyenne is dressed in a black coat or shirt. A bandolier made of red mescal beans is indicated across his upper body by a row of red dots. He also wears a black (probably dark blue) leggings made of trade cloth. Two eagle feathers are tied to his scalplock. The lance is the same type as in scene R1C3, - that is, the feathered banner lance of the Southern Cheyenne Bowstring Warrior Society. At waist height, he carries a shield, which has a light blue field, and two, small black birds are painted on its upper half. A trailer decorated with three rows of eagle feathers is secured to the bottom of the shield. (07) R2C3 In all probability, this depicts another war deed of the same Cheyenne hero. He wears a black shirt or coat, black (dark blue?) trade cloth leggings, and the two eagle feathers are also tied to his scalplock. A row of small circles descending from the back of his head to the horse's back indicates that he is wearing a pendant of German-silver conchos tied to his scalplock. His shield is the same: light blue field with two small, black bird figures in its upper half, and a trailer decorated with three rows of eagle feathers. His lance is the feathered banner lance of the Bowstring Society again. He lances a male enemy figure. This figure is unfinished but probably represents a White man. A long coat is indicated by a few lines, and no breechcloth is indicated. (08) R2C4 The Cheyenne hero rides down an enemy Indian who counted coup on the head of the Cheyenne with his bow (Fig. 3). The enemy might be a member of one of the Prairie tribes - Osage, Kaw, Omaha, Ponca - as is indicated by the roach headdress, and his long pigtail. His upper body is covered with a shirt, patterned with thin, red stripes. He has a quiver across his shoulder, but a small bandolier bag, and a powder horn indicates that he is armed with a muzzle-loading gun, as well. The Cheyenne also wears a red-striped shirt, and leggings made of black (dark blue?) trade cloth. His breechcloth is made from two separate pieces of trade cloth: black (dark blue?) in front, and red behind. A long string of German-silver conchos is tied to his scalplock. He is armed with another type of Bowstring Society feathered-banner lance. This 104
