Guide to the DVD-ROM

468 Klára P. FLSCHL - Szabolcs HONTI The DVD-ROM accompanying the volume contains the available data on the excavations at Felgyő, with the exception of the documentation on the work at the Geda-halom site. The excavation plans, photos and grave plans made during the excavations have been organised into separate folders. Unfortunately, the grave plans of several Avar burials were unsuitable for inclusion among the illustrations and only a selection of the grave photos is published here owing to limitations of space. The contents of the folders can be viewed with any image viewing or image processing software. One folder contains the field diaries, arranged in chronological order, with the exception of the sections on the Geda-halom site. The DVD includes two GIS projects based on the documents listed above, enabling quicker and easier data handling. The ArcReader folder contains the freeware version of the ArcGIS programme which can be downloaded from www.esri.com. The GIS project files can only be opened and read with this software. A brief overview of how to use the ArcGIS programme is provided in the How to use the project files and the Guide to using ArcReader files. ArcReader enables the browsing and querying of the data files, but does not allow users to edit, modify or delete any data. The two GIS analyses in the Projects folder were made with different goals in mind. 1 _projekt provides an overview of the location of the excavations and surveys conducted at Felgyő between 1955 and 1977, as well as of the surviving excavation plans. The original documents were georeferenced and fitted into their real-world position. The basis was a map conforming to the Hungarian National Grid (EOV) system (EOV group layer at the bottom of the window) into which the drawings made to different scales were fitted using reference points (affine transformation). As a result, the different documents are presented in a uniform system. The scale can be freely changed using the programme, the map can be enlarged by zooming in and minimised by zooming out. The original map sections can be found in the project contents on the left. Individual plans (layers) can be viewed separately by clicking the small box in front of them, and thus individual plans can be studied separately without being overlain by other ones. The different excavation areas have been colour coded to ease orientation (green areas: the main locations of the excavations between 1955 and 1977; blue line: trial trenches in 1962; purple: location of the 2009 excavation; pink: location of the trenches opened at the Ürmös-tanya site between 1960 and 1977). These can be found in the Ásatási területek group layer. The drawings which could not be integrated into the combined excavation plan can be found in the Nem beilleszthető (Non-integrable] subfolder of the Ásatási felszínrajzok [Excavation plans] folder (in jpg format). 2_projekt presents the analysis of the excavations at the Ürmös-tanya site, using a similar approach. In addition to fitting the excavation plans into their real-world position (found above the EOV section at the bottom), the Bronze Age and Avar features discussed in the volume are also shown (light green: Bronze Age inurned burials; dark green: Bronze Age inhumation burials; beige: Bronze Age pits; red: Avar burials; dark purple: Sannatian burials; light blue: grave pit shaped features). This colour code has been used on the plans of the excavations conducted by Gyula László between 1960 and 1977, and on those of the excavations directed by Csilla Balogh in 2009. The documentation of the latter is presented in the Ürmös-tanya 2009 group layer because the volume only contains the description of the Bronze Age and Avar burials. The Bronze Age inurned burials are marked with the grave number (e.g. 43), the Bronze Age crouched inhumation burials are marked with the grave number and the letter zs (e.g. 14zs), while the Avar burials are marked with the grave number and the word sir (e.g. 112. sir). The excavation trenches are shown at a 1:800 scale, the graves and the features at a 1:300 scale. The descriptions, finds and photos have been assigned to the respective Bronze Age and Avar features and burials by means of a toggle button. Clicking the icon in ArcReader's icon bar makes the toggle buttons (blue points) visible. The list of associated files appears by clicking the button. After selecting the requested file, the file can be opened by clicking the Jump button. The advantage of this procedure is that in addition to showing the position of the features and graves relative to each other, the available information on each feature can be requested with a few clicks. The file links have been arranged in the Hyperlinkréteg [Hyperlinks] group layer. Users do not have to work with this during the use of the database, but if the box before the layer names is not checked, the links do not appear. The trenches of the different excavation seasons have also been colour coded (yellow: 1960; orange: 1961; mauve: 1962; purple: 1971; pink: 1973; blue: 1974; brown: 1976; light green: 1977; black: 2009). The colour coded and digitised plans form a shapefile. The files for their positioning and the associated links can be found in the Vektoros_állományok [Shapefiles] folder. These files cannot be opened with any other programme.
