Zsófia Pintér The Lepényváró Fesztivál (The Pie Festival! in Lapistó The Lepényváró Fesztivál (The Pie Festival) in Lapistó - The Value Saving Work of a Local Public Benefit Organisation Zsófia Pintér Festivals are very popular in the 21st century. There are several kinds during a year with different topics. Local food festivals are public events of transferring culture. They intensify the community’s solidarity and frame their identities. Some of them have special historic and or ethnographic values - they build local communities and give identity or they remember the common past. To tell the aims of the festivals or the organisers’ motivation would be very tough for the first sight. They need to have a closer look with different ethnographic and sociologic research methods. The Lepényváró Fesztivál in Lapistó is organised by a local public benefit organisation called The Mosolygósabb Régióért Kulturális Közhasznú Egyesület (’For a more Smiling Region’ Public Benefit Organisation). It was founded in 2001 and organises 2 festivals in the town of Szentes. Szentes is a small agricultural town in the South-East of Hungary with 6 townparts and 6 peripheries. Lapistó is one of its peripheries. The Mosolygósabb Régióért Kulturális Közhasznú Egyesület organises the Kiséri Napok (The Kisér Festival) in the townpart called Kisér and The Lepényváró Fesztivál in Lapistó. Looking through the public organisation’s duties, I examine the historical and ethnographical elements of the festival. I am wondering why its subsistance is important for the local community, how it gives identity to the people and what its historical roots are. 384
