Béla Hajdú - Róbert Ujszászi Old commemorative medallions and insignias from Szeged Old commemorative medallions and insignias from Szeged Béla Hajdú - Róbert Ujszászi The first ones to conduct an in-depth examination of the numismatic memorabilia of Szeged were Ilona Tölcséryné Simon and Győző Csongor. Their study - which also acts as a sort of catalogue - was published in our Museum’s yearbook nearly fifty years ago. An up-to-date list was published then, encompassing all commemorative and sports medallions related to Szeged with an aim in mind to make it as complete as possible (while not including coins, monetary surrogates, insignias and other numismatic objects in it). In the past decades, thanks to the informally existing “coin making workshops of Szeged” the number of coins with local relevance has increased many times over and a number of older works have turned up as well. For this reason we decided that we’d attempt to collect the unpublished coin related materials from before 1949 in a chronologically restricted manner, amending it with the previously neglected - but quite substantial - insignia related material, we would update the register of our forbearers and publish a list of our numismatic memorabilia in a catalogue-like fashion with an aim in mind to make it as complete as possible. In our works we primarily relied on the material of the Móra Ferenc Museum’s coin storage, the collection of Béla Hajdú and a number of additional private collections. In additions to personal coins strictly related to local cultural and public life, we added a few coins with only loose thematic ties to Szeged (e.g: Attila József, Miklós Radnóti, Ferenc Móra and Gyula Juhász) For reasons of scope, research methodology and theme we excluded sports medallions and sport themed commemorative medallions and insignias, coins with local relevance, notgeld and money substitutes which shall be discussed separately in the future. 193
