Anita Hegedűs Blockbuster exhibition from the shadow of the Vesuvius Blockbuster exhibition from the shadow of the Vesuvius. Communication and attendance related aspects of the Pompeii Exhibition of Szeged Anita Hegedűs So-called "blockbuster” exhibitions, which have sparked widespread interest, are becoming more and more prominent in the life of Hungarian museums. These exhibitions appeal to a wide audience, they showcase interesting or especially popular topics, historic events and the works of well-known artistboth from Hungary and abroad. The Móra Ferenc Museum of Szeged organized a Pompeii-exhibition in 2016: Due to the theme of the blockbuster exhibition showcasing the catastrophe of Pompeii and thanks to original artifacts, interesting installations and innovative ways of communication the exhibition has achieved high levels of attendance: it was attended by more than a hundred thousand people in Szeged. Fundamentally, the basis of its success was due to its interesting, trending topic and the genuine artefacts, but the new type of online communications and regular, free guided tours have also bolstered the high level of attendance. In the present study we outline the theoretical aspects of the new museum image and the blockbuster exhibitions, we presentthe elements of the Pompeii-exhibition of Szeged, we examine the various tools of communication and press communication in relation to the exhibition, the system of free guided tours and we briefly present the most important characteristics of the visitor survey. 389
