Tömörkény István (1866–1917) örökében
Géza Forgó In the footsteps of István Tömörkény In the footsteps of István Tömörkény Géza Forgó Those looking for food, drink and lodging at the great restaurant of Makó between 1877 and 1880 were served by József Steingassner, who was the father of István Tömörkény. The young child observed the blooming restaurant and marked scene with great interest. His memories - and through them the civic life in agricultural towns in the age dualism - were immortalized in several novels of his. He went to the most prominent school - at that time - to the reformed secondary school, but his parent decided to have him educated somewhere else after he finished it. The Steingassner family packed up, left Makó and moved back to Szeged, to the "ancient town" as Tömörkény called it. The writes was not forgotten on Makó, however. Memorial plaques and events commemorate him during anniversaries and his works are frequently rented from the library of Makó. 35
