Changes of the literary historical location Tömörkény - Today Changes of the literary historical location Tamás Bíró-Balogh It is generally considered that writer István Tömörkény (1866-1917] did not receive the literary historical rank he deserved, his influence keeps on waning, his works are not read, he is not being discussed or researched, and he will disappear. Even though there are gaps to be amended, it must be pointed out that the concern is exaggerated; Tömörkény had indeed had a presence in Hungarian literature during the last twenty five years. His oeuvre was published and a monograph was written about him, for instance. And this is certainly not negligible, since most authors of Hungarian literature receive even less. In his most immediately living space, Szeged, his oeuvre and his biography are continuously being research, he has a statue made after him in the town, a street and a school was named after him and since 1994, there has been an award named after him, given to a museum employee performing exceptional professional work. These latter ones belong to the area of literal cult, which is being cultivated in Szeged with varying degrees of intensity. What is to be expected regarding the research of Tömörkény? Sándor Tóth currently is, and has a long time been performing text exploratory work, the first part of his works is soon to be published: he’s been systematically collecting early, unpublished writings of Tömörkény and shall publish them together in chronological order. His mail correspondence should be organized and published. His dedications should be collected (there are not that many around]. A monography ought to be published of him. The volume of Törkény studies by András Lengyel is also awaiting to be finished. A phone application would be needed to reach youngsters who are only be able to walk around with phones in their hands now - thus, they would be able to walk around, for instance, the literary memorial sites of Szeged, with places connected to Törkény, among them. Unconventional classroom lessons could be held. Or, still with the same group in mind, a Törkény slam competition could be organized based on similar occasions organized for Petőfi, Arany, or Attila József. Just like he did in his prose: combining the classic with the modern. 21
