NÉPRAJZ - Nagyillés Anikó: „Megvigasztalom őket minden szenvedésükben.” A jezsuiták válaszkísérletei a társadalmi változásokra
Anikó Nagyillés I shall console them in all their suffering' „I shall console them in all their suffering" The Jesuits' search for the answers to the changes in society in the Interwar Period Anikó Nagyillés Starting from the 19th century, due to the effect of the Enlightenment, the emergence of the bourgeois and the formation of nation-states the relationship between the Church and its followers has changed drastically, being faithful became more differentiated. The First World War, on the other hand, brought about a radical change. Women’s increasing levels of employment, the transformation of values and the broken, incomplete families have presented new challenges for the state and the Church as well. The detailed presentation of these would take us outside the bounds of the present paper, therefore 1 shall only discuss the answers given by the Jesuits. The Jesuit Order is intertwined with the Veneration of the Sacred Heart - having its roots in the 19th century - which, by the 19-20 century, became a wide-spread, official veneration legitimized by the Pope. In my study I showcase the children’s section of the Sacred Heart Alliance: I present the operation of the Szeged-based "Heart Guards" from the perspective of raising and pastoral care of children. My sources consist of archival documents and press sources but I also make use of the publications of the spiritual movement as a point of reference. 299
