Irén Fári Watchmakes József Tóth of Szeged and his family Watchmakes József Tóth of Szeged and his family Irén Fári József Tóth of Szeged (1875-1949) operated a watch and jewelry shop in the town from the 1910s'. The study presents the life and family of the talented businessman and the everyday life of Szeged in the interwar period. Among his daughters, the younger one, Margit (1922-2015) became a sportswoman and a college teacher, while the fare of her older sister Kata (1921-1941) shook the civic circles of Szeged. They created a Hamlet performance with the theater troupe of the university, which gained national attention. In the process, she fell in love with the student director of the play, István Horváth. The rector of the university at the time was Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi. Due to the "Jew laws” of 1941 the couple could not only be denied to marry, but physical contact between Jews and non-Jews was punishable with a prison sentence. The great hope of theater life, István Horváth of Jewish origin and the excellent chemistry student Kata Tóth committed suicide together. The family story was vivified by Margit Tóth with a lot of pictures in her old age. 211
