Vertebrates in Szeged-Szőreg and Vicinity Data from the Tisza-Maros Triangle

Authors of present paper have studied the vertebrate fauna of Szőreg and its vicinity. Szőreg, presently a part of the city of Szeged, was once an administrative unit of its own as an independent settlement. The studied area is of 4216 hectares, characterized by the predominance of agricultural habitat. Although the ratio of forested areas is less, it may still be considered significantcompared to the ratio offorested areas in the Southern Great Plain. Grassed areas are of very small size and are found sporadically. There is only one permanent wetland in the studied region, on the territory of an abandoned brick factory. There is no conservation area in the studied region.

The authors have detected 10 fish species, 12 amphibian species, 3 reptile species, 203 bird species and 46 mammal species, altogether 247

vertebrate species. Among the listed species, certain bird and mammal species are of significant nature conservation value. Within the group of resident bird species, the highly protected ones are highlighted, such as the Eurasian bittern, purple heron, barn owl, little owl, and short eared owl. Among the birds that do not lay eggs, there are some that flock in the region, such as the black stork, red-footed falcon, and European bee-eater. The eastern imperial eagle seems to have tried to nest here. The fact that greater short-toed larks also tried to breed in Szőreg and in its immediate vicinity is noteworthy. Among the mammals detected, certain predators, such as the common otter, the stoat, and the steppe polecats and the large bat fauna are of remarkable nature preservation value.
