László Mód Testing the Wines of Szeged Testing the Wines of Szeged Wine Competitions, Vinicultural and Oenology Presentations in a City of the Great Hungarian Plain (1875-1938) László Mód Research on the history of viticulture and oenology in the Great Hungarian Plain was launched several years ago, drawing on both archival and printed sources. In course of the research the significance of local oenology presentations in the development of the sector was recognised. The analysis of these public events shed light upon the social composition of viniculturists in the region. The events were organized and managed by different local and regional associations. These associations tried to modernize farming technology and supported marketing by organizing agricultural shows and markets. During the studied period wine shows were organized in the clubhouse of the organizing associations or in premises used by them. Depending on the products presented, the time of the wine shows were organized throughout the year. Following the organization of the first wine show in the mid-1870s, the organizers developed a detailed protocol for the events, which they strictly followed in the arrangements from that time on. The analysis of the wines presented in the shows sheds light upon the changes of the cultivated grape varieties and the changes in wine taste. Besides, it proves the growing economic importance of grape cultivation in the Sandy Soil region of the Great Hungarian Plain. The significance of the wine shows started to grow from the end of the 1880s, when they were organized as supplementary events of wine markets during the 1930s. Their analysis could provide viable data on the viticulture and oenology of the region. 505
