Gitta Bátyai Barbers and Hairdressers in Szeged Contributions to the History of a Local Industry Barbers and Hairdressers in Szeged Contributions to the History of a Local Industry Gitta Bátyai László Hilf, in his book entitled A szegedi iparosság története (Szegedi Ipartestület K., 1929. ] [The history of industries in Szeged] wrote about the barbers of Szeged. Originally the barbers of the city formed guilds, then, in 1885, 53 masters formed the independent Barber-Hairdressers' Department (BorbélyFodrász Szakosztály]. The most well-known of them were Mihály Cherzy, Antal Róth, Antal Heim, János Gottschall, Mrs. Hugó Hoffmann, and Sándor Dudás. It was Sándor Dudás, who urged the formation of the National Association (Országos Szövetség] in 1924, as well as the launch of the Hairdressers’ Journal (Fodrászok Szaklapja) in 1930. He wanted to persuade his colleagues on the similarity between their industry and the medical profession, pointing out that both professions aid mankind to become healthier and prettier. Members of the Hairdressers' Department of Szeged decided to create their own festival in 1930. They marched to the cathedral in an imposing procession. In course of the festive evening, some of the elderly tradesmen were honoured, and they also inaugurated their banner. They also suggested turning the feast of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian into a national feast of hairdressers. The Department actively took part in the public life of the city. The text of the study is supplemented by images of hairdressers, by depictions of their shops’ interior and exterior, and by copies of advertisements. 391
