EARLY MEDIEVAL PART OF SETTLEMENT AT KEMENESPÁLFA-ZSOMBÉKOS (COUNTY VAS)

(Summary)

In the site of Kemenespálfa-Zsombékos investigated in the autumn of 2008, Csilla Farkas excavated 41 Early Medieval features, among them a relatively large dwelling house with a stone furnace, a hutch sunken into the soil, several workshops and a fireplace surrounded by stones, several storage and other pits. Beside pottery shards net weights, iron sickles, whetstones, bone implements and iron objects have been found. As a result of phytolite examination of the millstones we gained also data on the plants produced by the inhabitants of the settlement.

Lacking other dating material I determined the time of the life of the settlement on the basis of the pottery. Pots found at the site were made on hand turned wheel, out of clay tempered with micaceous sand, small pebbles, ground pottery, graphite and lime grains. The shapes of the pots are varied, most of the rims are profiled. The decoration of the vessels consists mainly of loose combed waves and lines. Some pots were decorated also in the interior and exterior of the rim.

At the high bank bordering the former flood-plain of river Marcal there was a settlement founded in the second half of the 9lh century that probably still existed in the early- 10th century. The structure of the village was loose. Its inhabitants the ethnic identity of whom cannot be identified on the basis of our present knowledge, dealt with fishing, animal husbandry and agriculture.
