Water bodies, banks and floodplains The rivers, forced between the dykes, flood the narrow flood plains several times every year, and sometimes the water-cover might be several meters high and quite long. At these times the meadows, the trees standing along the water banks, and the oxbow branches, situated within the floodplain, are all covered by the The majority of the floodplain of the Berettyó and Körös rivers is protected nowadays. The surviving elements of aquatic plants give a hint of the former richness of the disappeared water world. The dead-arms are dominated by submerged pondweeds. Today in the deeper, open waters White Water-lily /Nymphaea alba/, Yellow Water-lily /Nuphar luteum/ and Water-soldier /Stratoides aloides/ are only very rarely found. In the oxbow branches by the end of summer Water-Chestnut /Trapa natans/ is present in great number. As a consequence of draining in the Southern Trans-Tisza Region the representation of marsh meadows and hayfields decreased considerably, but in the remaining patches there are some rare and protected plant species. One can find here the Loose-flowered Orchid /Orchis laxiflora subsp. palustris/, the Early Marsh-orchid /Dactylorhiza incarnata/, the Simple-leaved Clematis /Clematis integrifolia/, the Elecampane /Inula helenium/, and the Steven's Buttercup /Ranunculus strigulosus/. In the transformed landscape of the Hungarian Great Plain the protected areas along the rivers play an important role in the conservation of highly water dependent plant species.
