Molnár Zsolt: A Pitvarosi-puszták és környékük vegetáció- és tájtörténete a középkortól napjainkig

- Medieval place-names: none with tree names, some with shrub names. - Travellers: no woodlands seen in the 17th century. - Historical botanical sources: no woodlands observed in 1800, 1810 nor in 1886, the floralist from 1886 contains only 2 woodland generalist species which, however, can also survive without woodlands (Carduus crispus, Humulus lupulus). Conclusion: Though three woodland communities are potential in the region, there is no evidence of woodlands in the area in the last 1000 years. 4. Today the area is used for extensive grazing which is the traditional way of farming in the steppes of the Plain. Bits of information found: - Past ownership data: after the Turkish Occupation (in the 18th century when local settlements were laid in ruins) the area was leased and used for cattle grazing by Armenian and Serbian herdsmen. - Maps: Maps of the city Makó and the noble family Blaskovics indicate that the area was used for grazing in the late 18th and in the 19th century. - Settlement history: the city Makó had problems with pasture weeds in the late 18th century. - Historical botanical sources: most of the dominant species of pastures in 1800 and 1810 were grazing tolerant weedy species. 101
