of life. The mother tongue of the Rumanian gipsies is Rumanian. They cannot speak the gipsy language. The Rumanian gipsies of villages like Elek, Méhkerék have already broken away from the traditional life of the gipsy tribes. The author has a similar opinion of the troughmaker gipsies as well. As an introductory thought for his study on gipsy dialects, Mr. Erdős makes a survey of the history of gipsylore research work. He presents a lingual dissection of the gipsydom in Hungary: there are two large groups, the one sepaking the Carpathian gipsy language, the other doing the Oláh one. In his study he analyses the structure of the Oláh gipsy tribes in full detail, he deals with their denominations, their dwelling places. He calls the gipsy philologists attention: there is no English gipsydom, nor Hungarian one. Namely the determination "gipsy" is a pure simplism in relation to their proper lingual status. To conclude Mr. Erdős presents us samples of the gipsy language, comparative selections of the Carpathian and Oláh gipsy languages.
