Postcards from the one-time Gyula and Békés District in the Munkácsy Mihály Museum (1899-1945)- János Kocsor - Resume The reader is holding in his/her hand the postcard catalogue preserved in the Munkácsy Mihály Museum of Békéscsaba, published between 1899 and 1945 by various communities of Gyula and Békés District. These settlements are: Gyula, Doboz, Kétegyháza, Ókígyós in Gyula District, Békés, Mezőberény, Köröstarcsa in Békés District. Most of the cards in the collection were taken on the urbanised city, the county-seat Gyula, followed by Békés, Mezőberény, Köröstarcsa, while the smaller villages of Gyula District are represented only by few copies. The postcards with picture usually recorded those parts of the settlements in which the inhabitants could take pride before an outsider: the most remarkable buildings, the centre, churches, schools, institutions, and, for landscape, the environment of the Kettős- Körös and the living water channel. In this aspect also Gyula could take the additional advantage of being a county-seat and having memorable past providing the publishers with plenty of topics. The other extreme includes Doboz, Kétegyháza and Ókígyós, the postcards of which represent only the castles or other buildings erected by the aristocracy. The heads of the catalogue are the followings: series number, year or age, data on the postcard topic, publisher, printer, photographer, colour of the postcard, finally the inventory number.
