Czeglédi Imre: Munkácsy ősei és rokonsága The author of this study undertook to search for the ancestors of Munkácsy to the time it could be searched for based on the data of the register, and also presents his paternal and maternal relatives. Who were they, where were they living, what kind of occupation did they have? On the father's /Lieb/ side he managed to find the grandfather of Munkácsy. He verifies with register birth documents that the grandfather of Munkácsy Ignác Lieb was salt official in Sóvár (today Salivar - Slovakia) and was employed from 01 st October 1785 at the salt-mine. On 22 nd October 1793 he married Anna Kasztner the daughter of the local salt controller. Ther children were born in Sóbánya: Mihály in 1800, Mária in 1802 and István Imre in 1803. Mihály will be the father of Munkácsy, Mária and Imre will be the never mentioned uncle and aunt whose descendants are living in Hungary even today. By founding the real grandfather, the conception - existing since hundred years that the grandfather of Munkácsy was György Lieb — who was born in 1770 and who was mentioned in the so-called „Bártfa Lieb codex" - could not have been verified, indeed it should be dismissed. The study supported by archival data first presents the promotion of Ignác Lieb in the salt office positions, then the life of Mihály Lieb - the father of Munkácsy. While Ignác Lieb was staying all the time in Sóbánya, his son Mihály Lieb was wandering a lot to different salt offices. He married in 1821, his wife was the daughter of one of the lawyer of the neighbouring town Eperjes. They were living for eight years in Sóvár, but he was not able to promote to a higher position than an office clerk, thus from 1829 he began continuously to apply for salt office positions becoming vacant. He resided in Igló, Szatmár, Tárkány between 1829—1837. In 1837 he got to Munkács at first, in the next year to Ungvár, with this he reached the leading position of the regional salt offices, the position of the saltcashier /salis perceptor- Salzeinehmer/, then in 1841 he was reposted to Munkács as saltcashier. He stayed here with his family for eight years. His first wife died in 1835, he married about 1839 his second wife Cecilia Reök, who became later the mother of Munkácsy. Five childrens were born from their marriage, the third was Miska /Munkácsy/, who took at his adult age the name Munkácsy from his birthplace. The mother of Munkácsy died in 1850. The father married also at third time in 1851, but in 1852 the father died as well. After that the children became orphans and they went to the siblings of the mother, to uncles and aunt Reök. Only one of the brother and sister of Munkácsy - Emil - got to the founding of a family. He became an excise officer, he took also the name Munkácsy, and he retired from the Ministry of Finance. His descendants are living even today. On the mother's /Reök/ side not only the grandfather but also the greatgrandfather was found. Paul Reck/shoo!/ was living as sieve master in the XVIII th century in the western part of the country in a small town near Szombathely, in Kőszeg. The study follows in detail the life of two of his eleven children: Stephen /István/ went to the capital of the country to Pest /Budapest/, and he founded in 1802 the Rock Machine Factory, named after him. The author named this side of the family after their residence as „Rock family from Pest", and he presents the rise of the family to the high society of Budapest. Stephen who had founded the plant is mentioned in all his life as sieve master, and the plant was really developed to a factory by their sons. As a result of this profitable undertaking, the third generation grandson was known as one of the richest citizen of Budapest, and he was 116
