Czeglédi Imre: Munkácsy Békés megyében (A Békés Megyei Múzeumok Közleményei 26. Békéscsaba, 2004)

baron, and at the end of their honeymoon they spent one and a half month in Békéscsaba, in the Kismegyer farm. Munkácsy was happy again to be in his workshop. He painted two paintings, the studies to the Hero of the Village, of which the farmhands of uncle Reok were the models. In 1877 there was a great scandal in the Reök family, as the uncle committed suicide. The family then moved to Budapest. This is the reason why Munkácsy did not come to Békéscsaba to visit his relatives. At their friends' request he devoted a day on 7 October, 1890 to visit the town and friends. It was the last time he saw the memories of his childhood. After the death of Munkácsy some streets in Békéscsaba and Gyula were named after him and a statue was erected for his memory, and there are memorial plaques on the houses where he lived and worked. The Museum of Békéscsaba is called Munkácsy as well. At the end of the study two Hungarian friends from Paris are mentioned: an author, Zsigmond Justh, who came from near Orosháza, and a painter, Lajos Osko. The documents of their relationship with Munkácsy have been published. The work has been completed by turning the library upside down, by using a fine art collection and the Munkácsy relics of the Museum of Békéscsaba. 167
