Abstract This is the first volume of the new periodical of the Herman Ottó Museum in Miskolc. Our museum aims at co-ordinating the research work concerning the history of manufactures in Hungary partly with the help of this periodical. Each volume of this periodical called Manufactures in Hungary will contain the material of conferences which we should like to organize regularly. The papers of the first conference which will be held on the lfh and Ith October, 1989 are included in the present volume. Later not only the papers but the summary of discussion will also be published. We think it necessary to study every industrial activity existing in the early period of capitalist system together with manufactures. We hope that the participants of the first conference will form the further tasks and purposes in research. We intend to extend the territory of research so that we could study the industrial development of manufactures in Hungary in relation to that in Europe. Aiming at this purpose we should like to collaborate with foreign scholars. Miskolc June 1989 The Editors
