Város a Szinva két partján — Miskolc és a természetes vizek kapcsolata 67 TOWN ALONG THE SZINVA STREAM THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MISKOLC AND ITS NATURAL WATERS Keywords: Miskolc, Szinva, water use, floods The decisive factor in the history of Miskolc is its geographical location including the Szinva stream that crosses the settlement. It deserves attention not only for its impact on the cityscape, but also for its role in the daily life of the town. In the context of the dynamic interaction between the settlement and its environment, examining the everyday life of the inhabitants, locals’ attitude to the environment, the success or failure of the adaptation can be observed. By focusing on the years of dualism, the study aims to show the dynamically changing interaction between nature and society through outlining the benefits and disadvantages of using the stream for the inhabitants. The paper investigates a variety of water uses ranging from the smallest industries to the largest water-consuming sectors (e.g. mill and meat industry), the hygiene conditions in the settlement with particular emphasis on sewage disposal, various recreational possibilities (ritual and public baths, skating rinks) and other uses (watering, fire fighting, etc.). Besides the hygiene conditions that can be mentioned among the drawbacks of the water use methods, the smdy also focuses on the issue of regular floods as well as on the reaction of both the authorities and the locals to them, [translated by the author] Bodovics, Eva
