BY PEN AND WOODEN SPOON Literary and public activities of Ottóné Herman, Kamilla Borosnyay Keywords: female history, emancipation, female writers, diary, gender The main focal points of this study is the debate concerning the activities of female writers at the turn of the 19th—20th centuries, and in connection with this debate, the female question in general. The source foundation of this investigation are poems, letters and the diary complete with personal notes and magazine cuts of Kamilla Borosnyay, the wife of Ottó Herman. The ideas of the writer about artistic creation and female roles in family, culture and public life outline a conservative personality with traditional choices in both family and artistic life. Besides supporting the scientific life of her husband, herself contributed to children’s literature, and her sense of responsibility for society and for the protection of human and natural values compelled for determinate actions. It is thought provoking that her unpublished poems and novel demonstrate more eager self-observation and more complex perspective than it had been presumed.
