THE RELATIONSHIP OF LAJOS PÓSA AND OTTÓ HERMAN AND OF THEIR FAMILIES IN THE LIGHT OF THEIR CORRESPONDENCE Kulcsszavak: Ottó Herman, Ottóné Herman Kamilla Borosnyay, Lajos Pósa, Lajosné Pósa Lídia Andrássy, Sárika Pósa, Gömör, Radnót, Miskolc, Peleháza Ottó Herman was an archeologist, folklorist, linguist, and a scientist, and his activites as a politician and a public figure were also considerable: he is often referred as the last Hungarian polyhistor. Lajos Pósa is acclaimed, first and foremost, for establishing children’s literature in Hungary; he was the editor of the children’s magazine „Az Én Újságom“ (My Magazine) for twenty-five years. In addition, he was an extremely productive poet, hundreds of his poems were melodized, and many were practically folklorized. 2014 saw the centenary of the deaths of both Ottó Herman and Lajos Pósa. This study analyses the correspondence of the two personages and of their families. They exchanged more than a hundred letters, which reveal that their relationship began in the political scene around 1881, when Ottó Herman was the representative of Szeged in parliament and Lajos Pósa was a journalist, also from Szeged. Their relationship quickly turned to friendship, shared not only between the two of them, but also between their families. Apart from regular correspondence, they also frequently visited each other, sent their new works and books to each other, shared joys and sorrows, and helped each other in time of need. Their friendship could not be spoiled by the occasional disagreement, such as their different editorial practices. They deeply respected each other’s merits, such as patriotism, loyalty: and straight character. It was Ottó Herman who recommended Pósa for the Nobel Prize, and he initiated the country-wide celebrations of his friend’s fourtieth jubilee as a writer. After the death of Pósa, Ottó Herman was the greatest comforter of his widow, and after the death of Ottó Herman, the widow of Pósa accommodated and took care of the ill widow of Herman until her death.
