OTTÓ HERMAN AND POLITICS OF INDEPENDENCE IN THE AGE OF DUALISM IN HUNGARY Keywords: parliamentarism, elections, politics of opposition, the Age of Dualism, Ottó Herman, Miskolc Literature dealing with Ottó Herman focuses primarily on the scientific activity of the polyhistor, for obvious reasons. His scientific work greatly surpassed his political role in public life. Although he was a major politician of the independent opposition, he was never reckoned among the first rate leaders. His eccentric attitude hindered him from this position. Notwithstanding, the political career had an important role in his course of life, since it provided a solid background which served as a framework for his scientific work. In some cases politics made possible his scientific researches, at another time it just prevented him from delving into scientific issues. The aim of the present paper is to examine the meeting points of Herman’s parallel careers, to put the events of his personal life into a broader context, and to interpret these events in the context of the ideological relations and of the struggle for power between political parties in the Age of Dualism. The introductory part of the paper offers an interpretation of three important contemporary assessments about Ottó Herman, which make possible to apprehend the opposing estimations formed of the politician. The reason for these dissonant opinions is that actually he was seen as an outsider among both the politicians and the natural scientists. Thereafter, the most important stages of his political career are presented in the paper. Herman first became a journalist in Kolozsvár then he established a contact with Lajos Kossuth and tried to organize an independent political party. Finally he joined to the gathering of the Independentist parties. Finally, Ottó Herman’s results on the elections are examined with particular attention on the assessment of his role in the struggles within the Party of 48 and Independence.
