It is almost impossible to avoid making mistakes when a comprehensive archaeological monograph is prepared. This paper presents examples of the most common pipes of mistakes and pinpoints possible sources of error in archaeological research.

In her book, Amália Mozsolics names Sajólád as the archaeological site where the disc-butted axe from Szendrőlád was found (Mozsolics 1967, 158. Fig 22). However, the original piece is kept in the collection of the Herman Ottó Museum under inventory no. 53.638.1, and was discovered at Szendrőlád.

Ilona Hunyadi analyzed all Celtic finds from the Carpathian Basin. She was unable to study all pieces herself. Some of these finds she knew from the secondary literature, while she had photos of some other objects. The latter was the case with the horse bit from Szikszó. In the photo known to Hunyadi, the object is seen from above (Hunyady 1942—1944, 123—124. LIII.3). Therefore, she wrote that no enameled horse bits are known from Hungarian sites. However, a tripartite circular hollow on the cheek piece’s end suggests that this bit was decorated with enamel (Fig. 1).

Inventory numbers are usually removed from objects before they are put on display in an exhibition. This may cause problems after the exhibition, when the objects have to be put back to the right place. The anthropomorphic dagger from Szendrő was originally kept under inventory no. 1865/72. Hunyady wrote that the object was located in the Hungarian National Museum, but it had no inventory number (Hunyady 1957, 183). The dagger was recorded in the inventory again, and was given the new number 63.1951.30. (Szabó 1971, 83).

Different data are provided on burials in the Celtic cemetery of Szob in Ilona Hunyady’s study and in the report of János A. Horváth, the archaeologist who led the excavation. Grave descriptions differ in Horváth’s (Horváth 1945, 60—65)
