VELKEY László 2004 Az avasi „Ige temploma" történetének meghatározó dátumai. Fényi Gyula Miskolci Jezsuita Gimnázium és Kollégium X. Jubileumi Evkönyve. 65-68. BUILDING HISTORY OF THE ROMAN AND GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH OF AVAS-DÉL (SOUTH AVAS), MISKOLC (NORTHEAST HUNGARY) Keywords: Greek Catholic, Roman Catholic, ecclesiastical buildings, icon, tryptich/winged altar Avas was the new, speedy expanding quarter of Miskolc with 40000 inhabitants in the 1970s and 1980s. Here, a land for a church was indicated during the time of the planning, in 1974. When the new quarter of the town was built, this area remained empty in the middle of the housing estates. In 1986, Prof. László Velkey paediatrician and the representative of this district brought up the idea of the building church. In the following year the members of the council supported the idea. Originally the aim was to build an ecumenical church with the co-operation of the four churches (Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, the Reformed Church, and the Lutheran), but only the two catholic churches, the Roman and the Greek undertook the building. Both leaders, Dr. István Seregély, the archbishop of Eger and Dr. Szilárd Keresztes the bishop of Hajdúdorog gave considerable financial assistance for the building of the church. Besides, native and foreign believing, firms of the town, Hungarian churches in Canada, the Munich archbishop, the Maltese Christian social work and the European relief organization also assisted the construction. 11 essays were born for the announced architectural competition and the winner was István Ferencz architect and his colleagues Ferenc Bán and Tibor Balázs. The laying of the foundation stone was on the 2 n d of June, 1990, while the consecration happened on the 27 t h of September, 1992. It gave the name of 'the Church of the Word'. It is used both the Roman and Greek Catholic churches. The ground plan of the hall church is Roman cross-shaped with a round arched choir facing east. It reminds us a parish church building in Romanesque style. The fresco of the choir depicted the four evangelists was painted by Géza Xantus, the artist of Csíkszereda in 1996. The large crucifix and the four mobile base icons of the iconostasis also belong to the choir. These prove the liturgical space during the Greek Catholic rituals. Dr. László Kárpáti graphic artist and icon painter of Miskolc made them. B. Judit Kopp sculptor carved the station pictures of the nave from linden tree in 1994. The artist, Agnes Máger painted the winged altar of the Roman Catholic chapel in 1993. The iconostasis with one picture sequence of the Greek Catholic chapel was made by dr. László Kárpáti. In the neighbour of the liturgical spaces the Jesuit monastery and school complex were built gradually by the plan of István Ferencz, the Kossuth prize awarded architect. For many years, this Jesuit ecclesiastical complex with its compelling appearance and extension became a real small island in the south part of Avas, Miskolc. Vámosi Katalin
