SETTLEMENTS OF THE SZAKÁLHÁT CULTURE AT MEZŐKÖVESD-NAGY-FERTŐ AND MEZŐKÖVESD-MELEG-OLDAL IN NORTH-EASTERN HUNGARY - PRELIMINARY REPORT The sites lying along the planned track of the M3 Motorway were investigated between March and June 2002. The remains of two Middle Neolithic settlements of the Alföld Linear Pottery (ALP) and the Szakáihát culture were uncovered over a 17,000 m

2 large area at Mezőkövesd-Meleg-oldal (Site M3-75, Fig. 1), as well as well dating from the Copper Age Tiszapolgár or Bodrogkeresztúr culture. A total of 53 archaeological features were excavated. The planned track extended across the edge of the settlement, explaining the low number of settlement features. The centre of the Szakáihát settlement probably lay south-east of the excavated area, on the north-west to south-east running ridge. Two smaller pits (Features S2 and S4) and a well (Feature S30) can be assigned to the Szakáihát occupation (Figs 2-3, Fig. 6. 1-2). The investigated settlement section can be dated to the early or classical Szakáihát phase. A roughly 7000 m
