exhibited in his hometown of choice, although they were also shown in Pécs (1985, 1993) and abroad (1996: Wendlingen and Adelberg in Germany, 1996: Sorans, Neuchatel in Switzerland). József Wieszt was a sensitive artist, concerned with problems of humankind, with a personality given to experimenting. An early work, "Noah's Ark", expressed his concern that sophisticated machinery (zeppelins, submarines, tanks, spacecraft, satellites and the like) would all perish eventually. This belief can be felt in most of his works. He felt a genuine concern for the state of the environment. This apprehension is expressed in "Perspective study" (1981) in which Nature, perceived as a fanciful magical carpet, flutters above the man-made world. He painted many works during the last ten years of his life. He was greatly preoccupied with the social consequences of the political changes of 1989, and with the grave situation of miners and smelters. He preserved a fondness for Miskolc until his death. The museum in Miskolc made every effort to obtain the graphic works and drawings portraying the life of the town. Even though József Wieszt only spent a smaller part of his artistic life in Miskolc, his works are a greatly appreciated part of the town's public collections. Gertrud Goda 449
