THE SERÉNYI FAMILY IN POPULAR MEMORY AND TODAY The historical and cultural background to the stories I have studied the history of the Count Serényi family of Kisserény for over a decade. During my research, I came across interesting infonriation, which historians would probably have neglected, considering them to be unimportant. Being an ethnographer, however, I found them quite fascinating. Some of these anecdotes were recorded in historical documents, others were collected during ethnographic fieldwork using the classical technique of recording verbal information. The stories presented here recount events from the lives of various members of the family. Most concern the family's Putnok branch, and specifically László (1815-1893), founder of the Putnok branch, and his son Béla (1866-1919), as well as other members of this branch and the manor house at Putnok. Some of the stories date from earlier centuries, such as the earliest one from the 16th century, which is about Mihály, who as lord of Boldogkő Castle became involved in a dispute over the boundary of his estates with the owners of the neighbouring Vizsoly estates. Despite changes in the owners of the estates, the dispute continued over the next one hundred years, and was still a living issue in 1671, this being the reason that it was recorded in the inventory of the possessions of the castle and its properties. Another story, recounting a much earlier event, was recorded in a document from 1718. According to the story, the peace of the Zablát manor house was disturbed by ghosts and spirits roaming about the house, usually during the night, and the owners, Pál (1602-1667) and his wife, Klára Tertyánszky, built a chapel to curb the spirits during the reign of Archbishop Lippay.
